Q: How do I get to Bethany Cottage?

From Stromness Ferry - Come out of terminal and turn right (A965). Carry straight on until you come to a roundabout and go straight ahead (2nd exit). Follow the road out of Stromness for approx. 3 miles until you come to signpost for Orphir on right hand side (A964), take it. This road takes you past Houton, through Orphir village and past Kirbister Loch on the left. Once you see signpost for Waulkmill Beach on the right hand side, Bethany cottage is approx. 1 mile past this on the left hand side of the road.

From Kirkwall town centre - Go down Castle Street (A962) opposite the Tourist Information Centre. and turn left onto Junction Rd. (A963). Go straight across the small roundabout and then take the second turning on the right onto Wellington Street. Follow the road through High Street and "Old Scapa Road" (A964). Approximately 2 miles out on this road you will pass the Marness Renault Dealership (on the left in the 40 zone). Bethany is about 1 mile past this on the right hand side of the road. Access is shared with a farm called Twartquoy.

From the Airport - Exit the carpark and turn right onto the A960. Carry on this road into Kirkwall, through Bignold Park Rd., Dundas Crescent and Palace Road along Broad street (opposite the cathedral). Turn left onto Castle Street and now follow the directions given above (for Kirkwall town centre).

From Pentalina ferry - Carry on straight through St. Margaret's Hope and turn left onto the main road. Carry on across all four barrier causeways and follow the road until you arrive in Kirkwall. You will pass the Highland Park Distillery on the right. Follow the road round to the left, which takes you onto the Holm Branch Road (A963), then New Scapa Road. Go past the Balfour Hospital on the left and take the next left onto Wellington Street. Now follow the directions from Wellington Street as given above (from Kirkwall town Centre).

Northlink ferry, Hatston - Come out of the terminal road and turn left onto Grainshore Road. Carry on ahead and take the second exit at the roundabout, past the petrol station and along Pickaquoy Road (A963) when you reach the small roundabout, turn right (second exit) onto Junction Road. Now take the second exit on the right onto Wellington Street and follow the directions from Wellington Street as given above (from Kirkwall town Centre).




Q: What facilities does the cottage have?
A: 2 bedrooms, 1 double, 1 twin (with bunk beds), 1 plan lounge - dining room - kitchen, utility room with washing machine, Bathroom with bath and shower.

Q: Are there facilities for children?
A: Outside garden.

Q: Is the cottage suitable for a person with disabilities?
A: Sorry, no.

Q: Are there shops nearby?
A: The nearest shop is in Kirkwall, approx. 3 miles away.

Q: Are there any restaurants or pubs nearby?
A: There is an A La Carte restaurant approx. 1.5miles from Bethany.

Q: Are there any petrol stations nearby?
A: The nearest petrol station is on Ayre road in Kirkwall.

Q: Can my dog stay at the cottage?
A: We are unable to accept pets

Q: Do I have to pay extra for heating?
A: No, Heating is included in the weekly charge.

Q: Do I have to pay extra for electricity?
A: No.

Q: Will we need to take our own towels and linen?
A: Towels and linen can be provided on request for an extra charge. Please ask for details.

Q: Is there a telephone in the property?
A: No

Q: Can I smoke in the Bethany Cottage?
A: Smoking is not permitted inside Bethany Cottage.

Q: Can we stay for a shorter / longer time than a week?
A: Self catering lets are on a weekly basis, from Saturday to Saturday. Shorter stays would be charged at the full cost of one week here. Longer stays are welcome, again charged on a weekly basis.

Q: Can we stay at Bethany Cottage in the winter as well as the summer?
A: Yes

A: Yes

Q: Are there any good walks to do whilst we stay at Bethany Cottage?
A: Yes, around the bird reserve opposite Bethany, to Waulkmill beach and Kirbister Loch. Details of some local walks are available in welcome pack.

Q: Are there any sandy beaches nearby?
A: Waulkmill beach, voted Orkney's best kept beach 2006 is within one mile walk from Bethany.

Q: Are there any activities, events in the evening?
A: Details of events on within Orkney, and names and telephone numbers of places to eat out are displayed on the notice board within Bethany.
